What is EconomicsAmerica?

EconomicsAmerica is the hallmark economic education program of the National Council on Economic Education (NCEE) and its network of state Councils and local Centers. This comprehensive national program is dedicated to developing economically literate students by:

  • Setting Standards
Distinguished educators and economists, together with leaders from business and labor, work with NCEE to help define what every student should know about economics.
  • Developing Curriculum
NCEE constructs comprehensive programs which can be incorporated into the existing school curriculum, meeting teachers' needs from kindergarten through 12th grade.
  • Training Teachers
Through thousands of workshops and courses conducted annually by Centers for Economic Education, the National Council network trains tens of thousands of teachers every year in economics content and effective teaching methods.
  • Producing Materials
NCEE is the leading publisher of books, guides, and computer software containing proven strategies for teaching economics to all students.
  • Evaluating Results
Working with leaders in assessment, NCEE backs up its programs and materials with instruments for measuring student performance.

Six basic outcomes that constitute economic literacy have been identified; namely, that students will become:

- Productive Members of the Work Force,
- Knowledgeable Consumers,
- Responsible Citizens,
- Prudent Savers and Investors,
- Effective Participants in the Global Economy, and
- Competent Decision Makers Throughout Their Lives.

An EconomicsAmerica School District demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement in the quality and quantity of economic education provided at all grade levels by working with its state Council and local Center for Economic Education in using a process of curriculum revision, staff development, the use of appropriate instructional materials, and program assessment. Thousands of school systems across the nation participate in the EconomicsAmerica program. Twenty-four school districts in Rhode Island, representing more than 80% of the public school student population, have been designated as EconomicsAmerica School Districts by the Rhode Island Council on Economic Education and its Center for Economic Education at Rhode Island College.
