A Letter from the Graduate Advisor
Greetings!
Thank you for your interest in graduate programs at the University
of North Texas Department of Economics. Ours is a vibrant and growing
program, and we hope youll be joining us sometime soon.
We offer four different Masters degrees: a Master of Arts
in Economics, a Master of Science in Economics, a Master of Science
in Economic Research, and a Master of Science in Labor and Industrial
Relations. Although each degree provides a broad-based education
in economics, the focus is on the development of quantitative research
skills. In today's job market, there is a growing need for people
with the ability to acquire and analyze data. As a result, our graduates
are uniquely equipped for todays job market. Our program also
provides excellent training for doctoral work in Economics.
Our placement record for graduate students has been excellent.
The departmental placement office assists our students in the job
search process. Recent graduates have been placed in high-paying
positions as economists at such places as GTE, The Associates First
Capital Corp., American Airlines, the Bureau of Labor Statistics,
Bank One, the Texas Natural Resources Conservation Commission, AT&T,
and many others. In fact, of late weve had a very good sort
of problem: we cannot seem to produce graduates quickly enough to
suit the employers in this area. For links to outside employment,
please see our job placement site. For those interested in using
our program as a springboard to doctoral work, recent graduates
have joined programs such as Texas A&M University, the University
of Texas at Austin, University of Tennessee, North Carolina State
University, Penn State University, University of Virginia, Claremont,
and Georgia State.
Our students have also found it attractive to live in a community
such as Denton. While retaining a small, university-town atmosphere,
Denton is very much a part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex: each
city is only 30 minutes away.
So that it is possible for our students to work on their degrees
while employed, our graduate classes are offered in the evenings.
Finally, there are financial aid possibilities within the Department.
Indeed, over half of our graduate students receive some sort of
assistance.
Whatever path you choose to follow, I wish you the very best. We
hope your plans include us, and if I can provide you with any other
information, please feel free to contact me at tieslau@unt.edu.
