Scholarship and Financial Assistance
Teaching fellowships and teaching assistances funded by the department
support more than half of the department's graduate students. Nine-month
salaries range fron $8,201 for assistance to $10,458 for fellowships
and include medical insurance benifits and instate tution rates
for out-of-state students.
Some hourly positions are available for tutoring and grading for
Principles of Economics classes. These hourly positions do not provide
in-state-tution rates. Department scholarships available to graduate
students are the Tom Preston Economics scholarship,
the Sam Barton Labor and Industrial Relations

Verizon Graduate Scholarship. Number and availability
depend on funding. Applications for departmental scholarships and
work positions can be obtained from the economics office at (940)
565-2573. The Economics Department Scholarship Committee reviews all
applications. Winners are notified by personal letter. Scholarships
are presented at the Economics Annual Awards Banquet in late spring.

Department scholarship applications are available from the undergraduate
and graduate advisors and are also in the main Department Offices,
Wooten Hall 325. Announcements are made in Economics classes soliciting
applications. The deadline to apply is February 28th.
Scholarship winners are usually honored at the Department Spring
Picnic.

The Sam Barton Labor and Industrial
Relations Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to outstanding graduate labor and industrial
relations majors. To be eligible, students must have a minimum grade
point average of 3.0 on all college work. Performance in labor and
industrial relations and economics classes will be part of the criteria
for selection. The amount and number of awards depends on the availability
of funding.
Abe Melton Scholarship
This scholarship of $200, $100 a semester for two semesters,
is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate economics
major of junior standing, who has at least 60 hours and a minimum
3.5 grade point average.
Tom Preston Economics Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate and graduate economics
majors. Any economics major with a minimum GPA of 3.0 is eligible.
Entering freshmen or entering graduate students are eligible. Entering
undergraduate students must meet a minimum SAT score requirement
of 1000 or minimum ACT score of 24 and have at least an overall
high school GPA of 3.0. Entering graduate students must meet the

The Department of Economics
General Scholarships
This scholarship is awarded to outstanding undergraduate and graduate
economics majors. Any student, who is recorded as an Economics major
and has at least a 3.0 GPA on all college work, is eligible. Entering
freshman and entering graduate students are also eligible to apply.
Entering undergraduate applicants must have a minimum SAT score
of 1000 or an ACT score of at least 24. Entering graduate applicants
must meet the current Economics graduate admissions standards. Contact

The Lewis M. Abernathy Scholarship in Economics
This scholarship is merit based for full-time graduate or undergraduate
majors in economics. Students must have a minimum 3.0 average and
maintain full time enrollment status unless they are graduating.

The Rising Eagle Scholarship
This scholarship is for current econmics majors who are graduating with a BA/BS/BBA
in minimum 3.0 average and ahve amade application to the graduate school. The number
and amount of awards depend on the availability of funding.
The Verizon Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding graduate student seeking the
MS or MA in Economics or MS in Economic Research. To be eligible, currently
enrolled students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on all college
work. If the applicant is a student who wishes to enter the program and is not
a transferring graduate student, an undergraduate overall GPA of 3.5 is required.
